THE YOUNGEST HEAVY WEIGHT BOXING CHAMPION OF THE WORLD MICHAEL GERARD TYSON
Popularly known as MIKE TYSON was born on 30th of June, 1966 in Brooklyn New York. In the early stages of his childhood this small and shy boy of Lorna Tyson and Kirk Patrick was bullied by his seniors. In response to this, he developed his own street fighting style. As a member of Jolly Stompers gang, he was arrested for criminal activities many times. When he was twelve years old, he was sent to Tryon school, a reform school where he met Bob Stewart who introduced him to Cus D’ Amato. In 1984, his professional trainer Cus D’ Amato became his legal guardian. In 1985, he established himself as dominant figure in boxing by defeating Hector Mercedes in one round. In 1985 Cus D’ Amato died of pneumonia. The loss of his godfather severely affected his behavior and in 1986 he gained World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight title by knocking out Trevor Berwick. In 1987, he fought against James Smith and won World Boxing Association Championship.
Apart from his boxing style, he was involved in numerous controversies for instance in 1997 The Nevada State Athletic Commission fined him $3 million for biting Evander Holyfield’s ear in a rematch. The whole world condemned him for this inhumane attack. Similarly, in 1988 he attacked professional fighter Mitchell Green in a Harlem street brawl for which he was charged $45,000. He married television actress Robert Givens on 8th of Feb 1988. In an interview with Barbara Walters, Robert Givens declared that this marriage was a ‘pure hell’. In 1991, he was accused of raping Desiree Washington, a Miss Black America contestant.
The film Tyson released in 1995, chronicles the life of Mike Tyson. It provides an exploration of his life from the death of his trainer Cus D’ Amato to the time when sexual assault charges were laid on him. Michael Jai White played the role of Mike Tyson in his movie. In 2007, a book The Last Great Fight: The Extraordinary Tale of Two Men and How One Fight Changed Their Lives Forever was published by Joe Leyden. This book provides a detailed description of Mike Tyson’s life. In 2009 he appeared in the film the hangover. In 2013, he became famous for his one man show Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth.
Owing to the criminal charges, Nevada Boxing Commission denied him permission to fight with Lennon Lewis. In June 2002, he was defeated by the WBC, IBF, and IBC champion. This period was marked by a steady decline in his career. After being knocked out by Danny Williams and Kevin McBride in 2006, he retired from professional boxing. Moreover, he still holds the title of the youngest heavy weight boxing champion of the world.
